Quetzalcōātl and the Escaping Ghost of Mictlāntēcutli
Richard Thompson, 2021
Inspired by ancient Aztec folklore, this piece depicts the skeletal ghost of Mictlāntēcutli or Mictlantecuhtli, the god of the dead, escaping the feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl.
Quetzalcoatl was a source of inspiration for more than one piece by Richard Thompson, also appearing in his Mayan long count calendar piece B’ak’tun as his counterpart Kukulkan (in Yucatec Maya) or Q'uq'umatz (in K’iche’ Maya).
