Terrasite
Richard Thompson, 2006
A critique of the oil industry, Terrasite represents it as a parasite on the earth (“terra”).
The long proboscis represents that of the mosquito. However, look closely and you will see it also mimics an oil pump. Can humans afford to continue extracting fossil fuels from the earth indefinitely like the veritable blood from her veins? That is the question posed by this piece.
Melding the biological and the industrial, this work is one of the most striking examples of Swiss sci fi artist H.R. Giger’s influence on Richard Thompson, as demonstrated in the sinewy carvings throughout.
