B’ak’tun

Richard Thompson, 2011

This piece is inspired by the 13th (and final) bʼakʼtun of the Mayan long count calendar, interpreted as an ancient prediction of the end of days. Richard Thompson created this in response to the widely-publicized panic about this leading up to 2012.

In this piece, the feathered serpent/ dragon god Kukulkan (in Yucatec Maya) or Q'uq'umatz (in K’iche’ Maya) is emerging from—and destroying—the earth.

This is not Thompson’s only piece featuring the serpent god. He also makes an appearance in the collection as his Aztec counterpart Quetzalcōātl and the escaping ghost of god of the underworld, Mictlāntēcutli.

All handmade, all original designs, all leather. Price upon request.
