Banda

Richard Thompson, 2015

This piece is inspired by the Banda masking tradition of the Baga and Nalu peoples of Guinea, West Africa, which depicted supernatural spirits.

These massive, 4-foot-long horizontal masks combine human, crocodile, antelope, and chameleon features into a fantastical chimera. The pieces are traditionally worn during important initiations, funerals, and agricultural ceremonies.

All handmade, all original designs, all leather. Price upon request.
